Developmental Needs Fulfilled by Age Appropriate Montessori Curriculum

The development of the child can be classified as Physical, Psychological, Intellectual, Emotional, Social and Spiritual. All these aspects are embedded in the human child at its birth and keeps developing as the child passes different phases on the way to become an adult. The physical, psychological and emotional development go hand in hand as the child grows. A change in one dimension of the development will correspondingly alter the other dimensions too.

According to the Montessori Method the intellectual development of the child happens from birth to 6 years of age. The needs of the children are properly analysed and appropriate activities facilitating their growth to the next phase in done in a phased manner with the aid of didactic materials that will take care of the mortar needs while the materials of academic interest take care of the Intellectual phase. Since the children from different age groups are together, the habit of socializing also happens that helps in the development of their social needs.

In the ages of 6 – 12 the need of exploration arises which further attributes for social, intellectual and psychological development. Depending upon the background of the family, the spiritual development also starts in this period. All through the growth of the child, the emotional development happens which helps the child in differentiating the emotions, the cause and the result of these emotions or in some cases even channelizing the emotions in a fruitful way.

The needs of this various development dimensions vary according to the age of the student. If a child who was a very quiet and calm individual when he was 3 years of age could be a more buoyant person full of energy when he completes 7 years or vice versa, it only means that the development of the dimensions which define the personality of the individual is active.
